WHAT ALL CHILDREN WANT THEIR PARENTS
TO KNOW; 12 Keys to Raising a Happy Child
Parenting and education expert Diana Loomans is
out to help today’s
harried parents
connect with and lovingly raise their children in an increasingly
hectic world. In her new
book, What All Children Want Their Parents
to Know: 12 Keys to Raising a Happy
Child (New World
Library, May 2005) Loomans, along
with daughter and co-author,
Julia Godoy, turn to children themselves for
keys to successful and positive child rearing.
Starting with the idea that a well-balanced adult has much
more attention, energy, and
love to share than an adult who is stressed,
overworked, or overextended,
Loomans
maintains, ‘The image of using oxygen mask on an airplane is
fitting – only the adult
who takes enough oxygen first can be helpful
to the young who are dependent on him or
her for life support.”
Addressing parents steeped in the everyday realities and
struggles of raising children, Loomans uses inspiring and heart-warming
examples from both personal
and
professional experiences to communicate each principle while offering
practical ways to implement them – one small step at a time. Building
on the introductory “What All
Children Want Their Parents to Know” poem
she wrote with her daughter, Loomans
cleverly breaks the verse into short
stanzas to outline the principles covered in each
chapter. Select chapter
titles include allowing room to grow and make mistakes, using
positive discipline
with respect, giving unconditional love, teaching by example, and the
art
of true listening. Closing each chapter, parents are given playful, easy
exercises
designed to help them work the idea into their individual approach.
Using the collective voice of children and to express the desires they most
want the
significant adults in their life to be aware of, What All
Children Want Their Parents to
Know is a perennial that parents will find themselves
turning to time and time again to
refresh and invigorate their parenting
skills.
